Field Trip Opportunity!

Provide your school or group with an exciting field trip opportunity featuring live music and lots of audience participation!

"Clave Rhythm & the Development of Salsa" presentation at Flamenco Latino Studio, conveniently located in Midtown, is a low-cost field trip for a school or community group. This program is a retrospective of Cuban music, the birthplace of all forms referred to today as Salsa. It includes examples of forms from Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic which are part of the Salsa idiom. The presentation features explanation and participation in clave, the backbone rhythm of all types of Latin social dance music as well as participation from a seated audience in clave rhythm and soneo/coro (call and response singing). 10-12 volunteers are invited to learn 2-3 hand percussion instruments, then play with the musicians in different examples. The audience learns simple Mambo steps dancing in front of their seats. Artists: (4) keyboards/singer, singer/dancer, two percussionists.

Taking bookings for ONE of three dates:

  • June 15, 10:30 am, June 18, 12 pm, or June 22, 10:30 am

  • Only ONE date to be finalized, based on booking demand (minimum total audience, 25 people)

  • Maximum seating 80 people

  • Admission $5-7 per person, depending on the group size: groups up to 30 people, $5/person; groups 31-80, $5/person

  • Indicate your preferences, number of group, age levels

  • Event to be video recorded to promote show to other schools and presenters in the future (release forms can be arranged in advance)

  • Senior groups welcome to fill out reservations

Advisory to Senior Groups: building is accessible to wheel chairs, but space is extremely inconvenient to move in and out of. Limit of 3-4 chairs total. Group must bring own attendants, who must be present at all times, before, during and after show. Due to space restrictions, group may not stay in Flamenco Latino 4th floor lobby waiting for bus pick-up on street more than 30 minutes after show. No building lobby space available on ground floor for waiting.

Along with frequent performances and weekly classes, Flamenco Latino seeks to bring an understanding of both Spanish and Latino art forms to students through lecture demos. These educational programs are available for a variety of age groups and can be tailored to meet specific needs.

Presentations begin with a focus on traditional dance forms found in Spanish Flamenco and Latin culture and conclude with the Flamenco Latino fusion. This unique blend of Latino and Spanish music and dance provides a compelling and informative program for students of all ages. Following is an outline of two of the most popular programs:

2 NEW FIELD TRIP PROGRAMS AT FLAMENCO LATINO STUDIOS

One hour group class in flamenco or salsa dance, or both for up to 40 students, single instructor, $200.00. Scheduling available during late mornings and afternoons.

45-minute lecture demonstration performance in flamenco and the ida y vuelta ("round trip") styles, representing an assimilation of Latino songs and rhythms by flamenco artists which started during the late 1800s. The studio will be converted to a black box theatre space with curtains, lighting and seating. Three artists (guitar, 2 dancers), audience of up to 70, $550.00. Four artists $675.00.

Bookings will be made around steady studio rental clients, so transportation estimates for bringing groups of students must be accurate. Please call 212-399-8519 for availability.

These above prices are only for programs held at Flamenco Latino studios. If you are interested in booking a residency or lecture demonstration performance at your school, the fee will be based on date, time of day, number of artists, and travel.



45 Minute Lecture Demonstration
With Participation

Themes in the presentation involve comparisons of rhythmic approaches to music and dance found in pure Spanish Flamenco and Afro-Caribbean roots of Salsa, as well as references to the culture melting pots found in both Spain during the Middle Ages and Hispanic Caribbean countries during the Age of Exploration.

The program focuses on these sections: Flamenco as performed in Andalucia, Afro-Cuban dance accompanied only by percussion and singing, examples from other Latino counties besides Cuba which have contrbuted to the music and dance called Salsa.

Appropriate for grades K-12. Language is altered and presentation is shortened for K-3. Accommodations in program are also made for grades 4-6, 7-8 and 9-12

Culminating in a Lecture Demo
Which Includes Student Performance


Students learn percussion, song, dance, rap and recitation parts for a piece titled "Cuatro Esquinas" (Four Corners) culminates in a lecture demonstration at which they perform with Flamenco Latino. The workshops explore the diverse roots of Salsa and its link to Spain and Africa. The piece focuses on the rhythms from four Latino Countries which have contributed the most to this idiom: Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia and the Dominican Republic.

Appropriate for grades 4-6, 7-8, 9-12. Groups of up to 30 students. Auditorium stage or gymnasium required for workshops.

"The Roots of Salsa,"
which is booked exclusively through Young Audiences of New York.
